"Saturday Night Live" in a funk
over Bush's smooth delivery

No State of Union flubs to ape

Scriptwriters for NBC's skit show, Saturday Night Live, are in a frenzied rewrite mode after being forced to drop plans to mimic President Bush's infamous public speaking deficiencies. After repeatedly replaying his State of the Union Address, they discovered most of his oft-ridiculed mannerisms were gone.

"The president ambushed us with an entirely new set of mannerisms," complained producer Lorne Michaels, "and we don't have any performers ready to mimic them. It takes months to get a tic down pat."

Bush did again mispronounce nuclear, but Michaels said that foible has already been played to death.

"Besides, we found that many of the comedians who ridicule him for mispronouncing nuclear have some problems of their own. Two-thirds of them refer to the war in Eye-Rack while Bush gets it right."

White House press secretary Scott McClellan said Michaels shouldn't be disappointed that there weren't many mannerisms to mimic in Wednesday's speech.

"Actually, the president asked me to thank Mr. Michaels for helping to improve his delivery. A tape of recent skits showed him what to avoid."

But maybe it wasn't for the better. An NBC poll gave the president low approval ratings for failing to live up to his SNL image.
