Homemaking maven Martha
Stewart has devoted her time in prison to designing a new line of clothing
that she says has the freedom she lacks, because it goes anywhere.
Martha said she was so disappointed at not finding stripes in prison
uniforms that she decided to feature them in her latest creation.
"I found my fellow inmates wearing jeans, which was a great
disappointment, because they looked just like millions of people on the
outside," she said. "Inmates worked hard to get where they are, and they
deserve to dress differently than the free classes."
Prison is a special place for clothes-conscious women, Martha explained,
because inmates never have to worry about encountering another woman
wearing a better outfit.
"Since we all dress the same, it's the style that counts, not the
uniqueness."
The Martha Stewart line of prisonware includes gray coveralls with a retro
appeal featuring broad stripes. She expects it'll catch on throughout the
free world.
All of the clothing carries a new Martha Stewart Living logo featuring her
name and serial number.
Martha expects the parolee look to be in, especially after she is
released. It is highlighted by ankle bracelets of the type Martha will
wear when she finishes her sentence under house arrest.
The prisonware line goes beyond clothing. Martha was particularly
attracted to the grey dinnerware used in the dining hall, so she designed
drab settings that will add a touch of prison chic to any china closet.
Martha Stewart Living has also introduced a designer telephone inspired by
her life behind bars. It hangs on the wall and limits you to one
ten-minute call per week.
