Robert Blake shot after celebrating
court victory at dinner with lawyer

Lawyer had returned to restaurant for gun

Actor Robert Blake was shot by an unknown assailant last night after he and his lawyer had celebrated his murder trial acquittal at dinner.

Attorney Heza Freeman said he had walked to his car with Blake, but suddenly remembered leaving his gun in the restaurant. When he returned from retrieving the weapon, he said he found that Blake had been mortally wounded.

Freeman said he was very proud of his skills in winning acquittal in Blake's murder trial, "but with that said, it's important that justice be done."

Police won't say if they consider Freeman a suspect or a hero.

In a related matter, O.J. Simpson said he was saddened by Blake's death "because I had intended to join with him in a joint campaign to find the culprits who murdered our wives."
