Other congressmen blast DeLay
for not having a girlfriend to hire

Putting relatives on the payroll seen as naive

Members of Congress from both sides of the aisle are loudly criticizing House Majority Leader Tom DeLay for putting the wrong people on the payroll.

"A man of DeLay's stature should be smart enough not to put the names of his wife and children out there where everybody will recognize them," said a fellow Republican who asked not to be identified. "He should do as the rest of us do -- spend the money on a girlfriend or two."

A Democratic lawmaker agreed, saying no one begrudges a lawmaker a dalliance at public expense, "but to spend the money on relatives is a sign of poor financial judgment. Only a Republican could be so square."

A notable standout from this point of view is Massachusetts Democrat Barney Frank, who said it's just as wrong to hire a girlfriend as it is to hire a relative. Frank said he's proud of the fact that he has never had a girlfriend on the public payroll.

"I've never had a wife, either," he said.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan, meanwhile, said President Bush stands firmly behind Congressman DeLay "for using his office to promote family values."
